Thought Austrian Bureaucracy was terrible…
Well, actually it is! But it can even get worse! Namely: combine it with the British one!
It all started with me being duteous! I asked my dad to organize an election card for me, and send it to my British address. Well, post in Britain is as stupid as it is in Austria! At home I found a sheet saying that my mail couldn’t be delivered, because a signature would have been required and I was not home! What a surprise! Of course I’m not home at 11am! SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK! Actually you are NOT delivering mails to lazy, work less bastards!
So I made my way to Forest Hill to the post office, where they collect all the stuff not being able to be delivered! That’s where the real troubles started! Actually they do not sort the mails there depending on addresses or postcodes, but on priority!
So of course nobody can ever know which priority a bloody election card is! Highest in Austria I guess (according to the thousands of forms I had to sign, when I picked it up) and lowest in UK! Who the hell should ever care about elections there – they have a queen!
I also felt very royal in that post office! all red, you see the crown everywhere and royal mail is written onto every possible location!
However, half an hour later I finally had that envelope containing my election card! I really thought voting via mail was more exciting! It isn’t at all! You have to sign the voting card in order to proof that you’ve been alone and nobody influenced you! I wonder how they inspect that?
However, I have already drown my cross, put the paper into the envelope, put the envelope into another envelope and carried it to the post office! on the way down a car almost hit me! I payed one pound for the delivery plus 2,50 pounds for a return ticket to Forst Hill! I could have invested that money in a pint!
So I ask all of you abroad-interns! Is it really worth it making all that effort for a creepy election? Above all after last government’s frustration?
